Real-time interactive game

Multiplayer Twitch chat game built on Canvas API and WebSocket. Viewers interact via chat commands, OAuth auth, inventory and trophy system.

Real-time interactive game

Challenge

I stream development on Twitch and wanted more viewer interaction. Not just chat - I wanted viewers to actually do things on screen. The idea: a game controlled via chat commands. Type "!join" and your character appears, "!chop" and they chop a tree. Needed real-time sync and progress persistence between streams.

Technical details

Solution

Rendering on Canvas API with a requestAnimationFrame game loop - stable 60 FPS. Node.js WebSocket server connects to Twitch IRC and parses commands. Server validates the command, updates game state, and broadcasts changes to all clients via WebSocket. Auth through Twitch OAuth, inventory and trophies persist in the database across sessions. Built a Telegram Mini App for mobile viewers with touch controls.

Result

The project earned 24 GitHub stars. Viewers actively play via chat during streams - engagement is noticeably higher than just watching. Telegram Mini App lets mobile viewers play without opening Twitch.
